Zee Marathi is the oldest Marathi-language general entertainment channel (GEC). It was launched in 1999 as Alpha TV Marathi, in line with Zee’s other regional-language channels at the time (i.e., Alpha TV Bangla, Telugu, Gujarati and Punjabi, of which the last two are defunct), and renamed to Zee Marathi in 2005. A secondary Marathi GEC, Zee Yuva, was launched in 2016.

Zee Marathi and Yuva’s main competitors are Colors Marathi, Star Pravah, Sony Marathi and the free-to-air Sun Marathi and Fakt Marathi. It was the most popular Marathi GEC until 2020, when Star Pravah took the lead.

On 23 August 2021, some days after its 22nd anniversary, Zee Marathi introduced a new graphics package for the first time in 7 years, while retaining its logo from 2017 and the purple-and-orange theme colours. The new graphics incorporate traditional motifs and elements from the state of Maharashtra, much like competitors Sony Marathi and Star Pravah.

Unlike other TV channels, Zee Marathi uses Devanagari numerals rather than the conventional Arabic numerals to represent show times.
