Warner Communications Inc. was founded on February 10, 1972 when Kinney Services Inc. was split up due to a financial scandal over its parking operations and changed its name to reflect its ownership of Warner Bros. Although many Warner Bros. subsidiaries replaced this logo with the 1948 on-screen and 1953 print logos as the primary logos in 1985, Warner Communications retained the logo until it merged with Time Inc. in 1990.

The logo was created by Saul Bass & Associates soon after the corporation was known as Warner Communications. It is stated in IDEA Magazine's issue about Saul Bass that the design came about due to a growing confusion over the existing subsidiaries' branding, as each had their own identity, as well as the company being perceived as a movie company, which was less reliable as other markets, but also overlooked the company's business in those markets. The logo, as described in the compendium, is a symbol suggesting a "somewhat electronic" W, conveying the corporation's communication focus, and was designed to be universally used in the company's subsidiaries.[1]

Warner Communications created a joint venture with American Express (Warner-Amex Satellite Entertainment Company), which owned Nickelodeon, VH1, MTV and The Movie Channel, all of which are now subsidiaries of Paramount.

On March 4, 1989, Warner Communications and Time Inc. announced an agreement to merge and on January 10, 1990, Time Warner was formed from the merger between the two companies. This company was known as AOL Time Warner from January 11, 2001 to October 15, 2003 and WarnerMedia from June 14, 2018 to April 8, 2022 due to the AOL merger and AT&T acquisition, respectively.
