This logo for WWAY inspired the design of the logo and branding of fictional New York City TV station, WTRL 3, Channel 3 Eyewitness News. WTRL 3 was news anchorwoman April O'Neil's employer in the 1990 film, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The news footage found throughout the film for WTRL was filmed at WWAY.

In September 2013, WWAY announced that it would add The CW on a digital subchannel. The new subchannel launched on September 30, 2013, under the branding "Cape Fear CW".

On March 30, 2016, CBS announced that it would move its local affiliation to WWAY-DT2 from WILM-LD on January 1, 2017.

The CW moved to the third digital subchannel of WWAY on January 1, 2017, the same day CBS moved to a second subchannel of WWAY from WILM-LD when it became an independent station.
