Tegna acquired WNEP-TV in 2019 as part of Tribune Broadcasting's acquisition by Nexstar Media Group, owners of WBRE-TV and operators of WYOU.

Following its purchase by Tegna (which made WNEP as its first property in Pennsylvania), WNEP continued using the 2017 graphics for several months, and a Change.org petition was started for viewers to ask Tegna not to replace the station's longtime news theme, the Cliff Schwarz version of "Move Closer to Your World" (also known as the "WPXI News Theme"), with the group's proprietary "C Clarity" theme. On March 4, 2020, the station began using Tegna's standardized news graphics but retained the Schwarz version of "MCTYW" as somewhat of a compromise.
