WJAR-TV signed on for the first time on July 10, 1949, broadcasting on channel 11. It was Rhode Island's first television station and the fourth in New England. A primary NBC affiliate, it was built and signed-on by The Outlet Company and owned alongside WJAR-AM (AM 920) and FM 95.5 (frequency now occupied by WLVO. WJAR moved to channel 10 in 1952 to alleviate interference with WPIX in New York City.

This logo design was based on the logo used by CBS owned-and-operated station WCAU in Philadelphia from 1973 until 1995, and it was also used by former sister stations WDBO-TV (now WKMG-TV) in Orlando, KSAT-TV in San Antonio, WNYS-TV (now WSYR-TV) in Syracuse, New York, and WCMH-TV in Columbus, Ohio.

In 1996, Outlet Communications merged with NBC, making WJAR a network owned-and-operated station; the second in Rhode Island after CBS sold WPRI-TV earlier that year to Clear Channel Communications.

WJAR's current primary logo, used outside of newscasts since 2007, is based on the logo used from 1995 to 2012 by former sister station WCAU in Philadelphia. In 2006, NBC sold its five smaller-market stations including WJAR to Media General.

2014–present[]

WJAR 3

The Sinclair Broadcast Group purchased WJAR in 2014, after then-WPRI owner LIN Media merged with Media General.
