Taft traded channel 2 to General Cinema in exchange for Miami-based independent station WCIX in 1983, and on May 1 of that year, due to FCC rules in effect then, modified its callsign to WGRZ-TV, with the Z meant to be construed as the number 2. The station changed its logo to go along with the change.

WGRZ (2011)

On October 3, 2011, WGRZ initiated an online poll to let its viewers select a new station logo. The five proposed logos are based on the current logo used since 1998, though each features the NBC peacock logo aligned at the bottom left (and in one design, right) of the Helvetica Extended "2" (instead of to the left of the top hook of the "2" as in the current logo). Each of the designs also feature the WGRZ callsign and On Your Side slogan, rendered in the Eurostile font. The updated logo made its debut on October 29, 2011, coinciding with the station's switch to HD newscasts.
