Channel 31 began broadcast operations for the first time as WAFG-TV (an ABC affiliate, first period) on August 1st, 1959.
In 1963, the call letters were changed to WAAY-TV after Smith Broadcasting purchased the station. At that time, Smith was in the process of building a new station on channel 25 with the same call letters, but decided to instead buy what was then WAFG-TV.
WAAY-TV became an NBC affiliate on September 2, 1967. This bond would last until 1977.
On December 11, 1977, WAAY-TV started its second (and currently ongoing) period with ABC, stemming from higher network ratings and the lack of a duplicate ABC affiliate in Florence (WHDF, then WOWL, was the NBC affiliate in that area).
