Seal[]
1890s[]
The "Ricker symbol" is an overlap of two stylized letters, a U and an I. It appears as an architectural motif in several campus buildings designed by Nathan Ricker, a longtime member of the university's engineering faculty.[1]
1989–2013[]
Older incarnations of the "block I" existed as far back as 1892.[2]
1997–2017[]
The "column I" was the primary logo for the university's nonathletic units. It was retired when all campus units were united under the "block I" logo, which had previously only represented athletic units.[2]
2014–present[]
In 2014, the "block I" logo was redesigned by the University of Illinois Division of Intercollegiate Athletics in collaboration with Nike. The increased width of the vertical stroke was designed to represent the teams' resilience in the face of intense competition.[3] In 2017, the "block I" became the primary logo for all campus units, not just Athletics.[2]
