In 2000, Charoen Pokphand acquired Wireless Communication Services Co., Ltd. (WCS) in order to start a mobile network on the 1800MHz frequency. WCS entered into a partnership with France Télécom in 2001; it was renamed to CP Orange and later to TA Orange, the name under which it started operations in 2002.

Orange (France Télécom) exited the joint venture in 2004, selling its stake to TelecomAsia Corp. (now True Corporation); the Orange brand continued until 2006.
