Sci-Fi Channel

Sci-Fi Channel
SCI FI 2000

The Sci•Fi Channel was launched on September 24, 1992 by USA Networks. The original visual identity borrowed heavily from the classics in the genre and sci-fi clichés.

The Sci-Fi was relaunched in March 1999 with several new shows, and they also dropped the hyphen and "Channel" from the name.[1][2]

Sci Fi 2002

A new look and a new logo for Sci Fi was launched on December 2, 2002, with the launch of the Steven Spielberg miniseries Taken. The new look was created with help from Lambie-Nairn of London.[3][4][5] They also rolled out the slogan with a single word, "If", spelled from the first "I" and the "F" of the channel name.

On March 16, 2009, NBCUniversal announced that Sci Fi would be rebranded as Syfy. The main reason stated was that the term "Sci Fi" was considered too nebulous to be trademarked, as Sci Fi or Science Fiction are descriptors for the genre. Unofficially, the channel wanted to ward off the idea the channel was just a collection of space epics. This is empathized by the abandonment of the planet motif. The new name was rolled out on screen on July 7, 2009.

The ID's and on-air-look for the channel were developed by the London-based studios Proud Creative and ManvsMachine. A font called "Syfy Sans" was created by Brooklyn-based Village Type Foundry.
