Sony Music Entertainment (abbreviated as SME, or commonly known as simply Sony Music) is a group of 4 major record labels, including Columbia, Epic, Arista and RCA. It is the music division of the Tokyo-based Sony Group Corporation. The company was created on January 1, 1991 after Sony purchased Columbia Records and its international arm from CBS Inc. and Laurence Tisch for $2 billion on November 17, 1987 and the sale was completed on January 5, 1988. They were later granted a temporary license to use the CBS name until the rename of the mentioned date.
