In December 1998, Scottish Hydro, at the time an independent company, merged with electricity supplier Southern Electric to form SSE. The Scottish Hydro Brand was kept by SSE for supplying gas and electricity in Scotland.
In August 2004, the company adopted the colours used on all other SSE products and services.
In September 2008, the company replaced the stylised 'HE', which had been used before the takeover by SSE, to the SSE swirl, which was used on all other SSE products and services.
The 'Electric' was removed from the brand name in February 2010 due to the fact that the company also supply gas, not just electricity.
