On September 5, 1983, the program was renamed The MacNeil/Lehrer Newshour, becoming the nation's first 60-minute evening news program on television. On October 20, 1995, Robert MacNeil retired.

On October 23, 1995, the program was renamed The Newshour with Jim Lehrer.
