NITV originally launched on 13 July 2007, replacing the Imparja Info Channel on Optus Aurora. It soon became available on free-to-air Optus D1 to Australia and eastern Papua New Guinea. On 1 November 2007, transmission began on Foxtel and Austar's subscription service on channel 180. On 30 April 2010, NITV ceased broadcasting on Sydney's digital television data-casting service but remains available via Foxtel and Austar.
On 12 December 2012, NITV was relaunched as a free-to-air channel on Freeview channel 34.
On 29 February 2016, NITV changed its logo to an abstract representation of fire constructed from pieces of the SBS mercator logo. Fire is an motif of Aboriginal Australian culture and was commonly alluded to in the network's former idents.
