May Company was once a regional chain of The May Department Stores Company from 1925-1993. The store originally opened as A. Hamburger & Sons in 1881 in Los Angeles, CA. The May family later purchased the company from the Hamburger family in 1925 and renamed it to May Company California in 1927. The store merged with nearby sister division Robinson's in 1992 and was then now known as Robinsons-May. It was the only store to retain the name after all other May divisions folded into other regional nameplates.
