May Company was once a regional chain of The May Department Stores Company from 1923–1993. The store originally opened as A. Hamburger & Sons in 1881 in Los Angeles, CA. The May family later purchased the company from the Hamburger family in 1923 and renamed it to May Company California. The store merged with nearby sister division Robinson's in 1992 and was then known as Robinsons-May. It was the only store to retain the name after all other May divisions folded into other regional nameplates.
