Before its foundation, KTLA was an experimental TV station under the callsign of W6XYZ licensed by the FCC in 1939, broadcasting on VHF channel 4; it did not sign on the air until September 1942.
1947–1955[]
KTLA was officially signed-on the air on January 22, 1947, moved to VHF Channel 5, making the first commercial TV station not only in Los Angeles, but in California, located in the Pacific Time Zone and the callsign starting with "K" (west of the Mississippi River). It's also the eighth commercial TV station in the United States, after WTTG in Washington, D.C., WBKB-TV (now WBBM-TV) in Chicago, WPTZ (now KYW-TV) in Philadelphia, WRGB in Schenectady, New York, and three TV stations in New York City: WNBT (now WNBC), WCBW (now WCBS-TV), WABD (now WNYW). For many years, KTLA was based on the studio campus of Paramount Pictures.
