KSTP-TV (Channel 5) originally signed on the air on April 27, 1948 in Saint Paul, owned by Hubbard Broadcasting since its inception. KSTP-XHGC-HRTG 5

First used by KSTP-TV in April 1969, this is the original variation of what has been affectionately known as the "Groovy 5" logo. This same logo would be used by Mexican television network XHGC-TV (Canal 5, Mexico City) from 1980 to 1986, as well as by Canal 5 (HRTG, Tegucigalpa) in Honduras from 1981 to 1996 (the latter network, as Canal 5 El Líder, has used a slightly modified version since 1996).

In 1979, KSTP switched its affiliation to the then-high-rated ABC, which at the time was seen on KMSP-TV (VHF channel 9, now a Fox owned-and-operated station). NBC later affiliated with Metromedia's independent station WTCN-TV (VHF channel 11, now KARE).
