KMAX swapped affiliations with KQCA from The WB to UPN in 1998. This was due to the station being acquired by the Paramount Stations Group that same year.

During this logo's run, Viacom Stations Group would purchase CBS affiliate KOVR from the Sinclair Broadcast Group in 2004. This made KMAX a sister station to channel 13. The Helvetica Black 31 is derived from its KPWB-era logo.

KMAX 2023

On October 3, 2022, Nexstar Media Group acquired majority ownership of The CW. Under the agreement, CBS was given the right to pull its affiliations from KMAX and its seven other CW stations. On May 5, 2023, CBS announced that it would exercise that right and KMAX would cease airing the network's programming on September 1 and revert to an independent station. That June, KMAX began using an interim logo featuring the KMAX callsign in a box, similar to the logos of CBS O&Os such as KPIX-TV and KDKA-TV.

KMAX 31 2023

In the last week of August 2023, KMAX introduced another new logo. This logo is similar to the "city + channel" logos used by fellow ex-CW siblings in Atlanta (WUPA), Detroit (WKBD-TV), Philadelphia (WPSG), St. Petersburg (WTOG), and Tacoma (KSTW), though it has the callsign instead of the city.
