KGPE originally signed on the air as KJEO on September 30, 1953, as an ABC affiliate. It was originally owned by O'Neill Broadcasting Company, which sold the station in 1961 to Shasta Telecasting Corporation.

Retlaw Broadcasting, a unit of Retlaw Enterprises (a company owned by relatives of Walt Disney), acquired channel 47 from Shasta Telecasting in 1968.

On September 8, 1985, KJEO-TV switched affiliations with KFSN-TV after Capital Cities, purchased and merged with ABC, converting it to an ABC owned-and-operated station; the 1973 logo was kept.

Fisher Broadcasting merged with Retlaw in 1999, and sold KJEO to the The Ackerley Group (which owned Bakersfield-based NBC affiliate KGET at the time) in 2000, although Fisher would reenter the Central Valley market with the acquisition of KBAK-TV on January 1, 2008.

Under its Ackerley ownership, KJEO became KGPE on September 14, 2000; Clear Channel Communications' television subsidiary merged with Ackerley in 2001.

Clear Channel entered into an agreement to sell its entire group of television stations to Newport Television on April 20, 2007.

2009–2013[]

KGPE 09

Newport Television agreed to sell KGPE, along with NBC affiliate KGET-TV and Telemundo affiliate KKEY-LP in Bakersfield, to the Nexstar Broadcasting Group on November 5, 2012. The FCC approved the sale on January 23, 2013; which was completed on February 19. Nexstar subsequently announced the acquisition of KSEE from Granite Broadcasting, in the process forming a duopoly with KGPE.
