Originally signed on the air on December 4, 1983, as KBVO–TV, Austin's first independent station on UHF channel 42. It was first owned-and-operated by the Austin Television Company, a group of local investors including former congressman Joe Kilgore, but dominated by Darrold Cannan, Jr., owner of KAMR-TV in Amarillo, and Michael McKinnon, who owned two Texas stations (KBMT and KIII) and a third in San Diego (KUSI-TV); local advertising executive Steve Beard was the general manager.
The original die-cut "42" logo incorporated a "lone star" insignia (commonly used in the logos of Texas-based stations such as KXAS-TV, WOAI-TV and KBMT) and an outline of the Texas State Capitol dome within the star's white/negative space (the latter being incorporated into the logo full-time in 1985). Before channel 42 signed on, the UHF allocation was first used by former independent-turned NBC affiliate KHFI-TV until it moved to UHF channel 36 and became KTVV (now KXAN-TV) in 1973.
