KDVR originally signed on the air on August 10, 1983 as Denver's first UHF television station on channel 31 and was owned-and-operated by the Centennial Broadcasting Corporation. KDVR becomes a Fox affiliate on October 9, 1986.

Renaissance sold KDVR to the Fox Television Stations subsidiary of News Corporation on November 15, 1994 in exchange for its O&O KDAF (UHF channel 33) in Dallas–Fort Worth, which was set to lose the affiliation to then-CBS affiliate KDFW (channel 4), as a result of an affiliation deal with New World Communications.

Fox Television Stations sold KDVR and seven other stations to Local TV (operated by Oak Hill Capital Partners) on December 22, 2007, which the sale was finalized on July 14, 2008.

Tribune Broadcasting purchased KDVR outright on July 1, 2013, as part of its $2.75 billion acquisition of Local TV; the sale was finalized on December 27, forming a legal duopoly between KDVR and CW affiliate KWGN-TV (channel 2).
