The station signed on November 1, 1953 as a primary NBC affiliate which also had secondary affiliations with ABC, CBS and DuMont. The station was originally owned by Frank W. Mayborn, publisher of The Temple Daily newspaper and owner of KTEM radio.

In 1984, the station switched to ABC but its affiliation only lasted one year. After KXXV (channel 25) launched on March 6, 1985 and picked up the NBC affiliation, channel 6 remained as a sole ABC affiliate until the end of that year when it switched back to NBC.

This flipped version of this logo used by KHJ-TV (now KCAL-TV) in Los Angeles from 1986–1989.
After KCEN shuttered its analog signal, it began branding under channel 9 instead of channel 6. This branding only lasted a year.
2010–2016[]
In 2010, KCEN returned to virtual channel 6. On May 14, 2014, the Gannett Company announced that it would acquire the LBC stations (including KCEN-TV) for $215 million. The sale was completed on July 8 of that year. In 2015, Gannett spun-off its broadcasting assets into Tegna.
