WHA team
1972-1978
The first Houston Aeros team were formed when the planned Dayton Arrows World Hockey Association franchise relocated before their first match. After it emerged that the WHA's plans to merge with the National Hockey League did not include the Aeros, they folded on July 6, 1978.
IHL & AHL team
1994-2002

The second hockey club called the Houston Aeros was founded in 1994, playing in the International Hockey League. After the 2000-01 season, the IHL folded. The Aeros were one of six IHL teams to join the American Hockey League as expansion teams.
2002-2006

After the 2012-13 season, the team was relocated to Des Moines and rebranded to the Iowa Wild.
