HBO Latin America was launched on October 31, 1991 as HBO Ole, a joint-venture between WarnerMedia (then Time Warner) and Omnivisión Latinoamérica Entertainment (Ole, owned by Enrique Cuscó, and currently Ole Communications).

By the late 1990s, Ole became a minor shareholder in the society with 12% of the share, after new shareholders entered to the company (namely, Sony in 1993 and Disney in 1997).

To reflect these changes, in March 2000, HBO-Olé was rebranded simply as HBO.
