Forums: Index > Watercooler > When pages get crowded
Sometimes pages get crowded and hard to follow as users fill galleries with dozens of images. The natural reaction to this from people interested in readable pages is usually to occasionally remove all galleries and chuck them into a sub-page. I find this perfectly understandable, we all want useful and well-formatted pages. But we also loose out on the additional insight provided by these images. I'd therefore suggest some guidelines for a controlled use of supplementary images.
- Limit the number of images per gallery in articles. I'd say we should have a general limit of 8 images per gallery. A good example would be idents/network IDs, were one could select 2-4 images to represent an entire series, and put all other examples on a sub-page. Disney Channel (International) is a good example of this. Once a gallery grows too large, create a sub-page for the full gallery, but leave a selection of 2-8 images and a link on the main page.
- Galleries should be left-aligned, without borders and formatted to fit four images per row (meaning each picture is about 150 px wide). Many of our galleries are centered, with borders and three images per row. This is a major contributor to the fact that pages with lots of galleries look messy. Centered objects interrupt the flow of a page, and images wider than 150px compete with the section's main logo for attention.
- Think editorially about images. What does yet another example add to the understanding of a subject? Avoid adding too many images that don't relate to the text.

- Good points. Please read Community help: Galleries and slideshows - wikitext for an explanation of what code to use. I'll get galleries fixed as I spot them now that I've found the code to use. The other admins should do the same. Digifiend Talk PR/SS KR MH Toku JD Garo TH CG UM Logos CLG DW 20:34,10/28/2012
Also, why do people revert edits to what I have done (and possibly some other people) relating to this? Please explain your reasons here... --Bloonstdfan360 (talk) 19:37, July 16, 2013 (UTC)
- Hello? People are reverting with no reason again. --Bloonstdfan360 (talk) 03:54, July 25, 2013 (UTC)
- I'm fine with this, I was never a fan of pages littered with idents when this is a logo site, but I don't see how left aligned galleries are less likely to 'interrupt the flow of a page' any more than centred galleries, when article are centred anyway. -- [[ axg // ✉ ]] 20:57, October 29, 2013 (UTC)
- Any images used in galleries certainly do need to show the execution of the logo in question. If the logo isn't present, the image doesn't belong here. Digifiend Talk PR/SS KR MH Toku JD Garo TH CG UM Logos CLG DW 00:45,30/10/2013
