XETV originally signed on the air on April 29, 1953, as an English-language independent station licensed to Tijuana, serving the San Diego market on VHF channel 6. It has been owned by the Azcárraga family since its inception, but was operated by Bay City Television, a subsidiary of what would later become Televisa.

In 1968, Western Telecasters, then-owners of KCST (channel 39, now NBC O&O KNSD), challenged XETV's affiliation renewal with ABC - claiming that it's no longer appropriate for a Mexican-licensed station to carry an American network when there's now a station available in America (then-recently launched KCST) to carry their programming, as well as claims that XETV didn't have enough local programming that served the San Diego side. The FCC sided with KCST in May 1972 and ABC programs gradually moved to that station throughout June 1973, leaving XETV as an independent station for the next 13 years.

In 2008, KSWB-TV picked up the Fox affiliation from XETV. That same year XETV would be rebranded to San Diego 6 and would announce an affiliation deal with The CW. In 2012, the station would launch a relay of Televisa's Canal 5 network on digital channel 6.2, this was due to XHBJ-TV changing from Canal 5 programs to Galavisión programs that same year.

On May 31, 2017, XETV disaffiliated from The CW, sending the affiliation to the second digital subchannel of KFMB-TV. This ended the station's 64-year run serving Tijuana and San Diego as an English-language television station.
