WFXT originally signed on as WXNE-TV on October 10, 1977. This logo design was standard across stations owned by the Christian Broadcasting Network, including its flagship WYAH (now WGNT.)

CBN sold WXNE-TV to the Fox Television Stations subsidiary of News Corporation on December 31, 1986, which became the current WFXT on January 19, 1987 and the first station to be acquired separately from its acquisition of independent stations from Metromedia. Before channel 25's acquisition by the network, WNAC-TV (channel 64) in Providence, Rhode Island, WPXT in Portland, Maine (channel 51, now a CW affiliate) and WTIC-TV (channel 61) in Hartford, Connecticut all served as New England's Fox affiliates. They later placed the station in a trust company in 1989, after the FCC ruled that News Corporation cannot own a television station and a newspaper in the same market. They later sold the station to the Boston Celtics in 1990.

This logo branding, currently in use by most of its then-sister stations, is based on the Fox News logo. In 2014, 21st Century Fox subsidiary Fox Television Stations exchanged this station and WHBQ-TV in Memphis with KTVU and KICU in San Francisco. This logo continued to be used under the ownership of Cox Media Group until October 26, 2015.

This new logo was unveiled on October 27, 2015, to replace the one previously used under previous ownership.

In early February 2017, the station removed the "Fox" reference from its newscast title, two years before removing the "Fox" reference in the station's general branding and restoring the Boston 25 brand full-time.
