Originally signed on the air on March 25, 1984 as an independent station on UHF channel 38. The TVX Broadcast Group acquired channel 38 in 1985, who later agreed to affiliate with the then-new Fox Broadcasting Company on October 9, 1986. TVX sold channel 38 to Qwest Broadcasting, a company owned by minority investors led by musician Quincy Jones.

Despite the station not owned by Fox Television Stations at the time (which owns KRIV in Houston), this logo used Friz Quadrata Bold.

On January 1, 1996, WNOL-TV lost its Fox affiliation as part of the 1994-1995 TV network realignment. Fox programming moved to WVUE-TV, WNOL-TV joined The WB.
