WPDS-TV[]

1984–1985[]

Originally signed on the air on February 1, 1984 as WPDS-TV, an independent television station on UHF channel 29 first owned by Ron Palamara of Anacomp, Chris Duffy and Simon brothers Fred, Herbert and Melvin (who was a co-owner of the Indiana Pacers).

Palamara, Duffy and Simon sold the station to the Providence-based Outlet Company (through its Atlin Communications subsidiary) in 1985; the station's call letters were then changed to the current WXIN on August 10 of that year. The station lost the Pacers broadcast rights after the sale, with the telecasts returning to rival station WTTV for the 1985-86 season. It became a charter Fox affiliate on October 9, 1986 after channel 4 turned down the affiliation offer despite its status as being one of the strongest independent stations. Outlet sold channel 59 along with WATL in Atlanta to Chase Broadcasting in December 1989.

Tribune acquired WTTV and its Kokomo satellite WTTK (UHF channel 29) from the Sinclair Broadcast Group (who would later attempt to acquire Tribune in 2017) on April 29, 2002 and the sale was finalized on July 24 of that year, resulting in a duopoly with channel 4.
