The station started as an NBC affiliate on March 15, 1958 as KGHL-TV and was originally owned by the Midland Empire Broadcasting Company along with KGHL radio. In 1962, KGHL-AM-TV was sold to Crain-Snyder Television. That same year, KGHL radio was sold to Georce C. Hatch.
KULR-TV[]
1963–1968[]
In 1963, the callsigns were changed to KULR-TV and added a secondary affiliation with ABC that same year. In 1967, Harriscope Broadcasting, which owned KFBB-TV (channel 5) in Great Falls purchased the station.
1968–1981[]
In 1969, channel 8 became a sole ABC affiliate alongside its sister station KFBB-TV. NBC was later regulated to secondary status until 1982 when it affiliated with KOUS-TV (channel 4, now KUHM).

In 1986, Harriscope sold KULR-TV and KTWO-TV (channel 2, currently an ABC affiliate) in Casper, Wyoming to Dix Communications. A year later, KULR switched back to NBC in August of that year in order to get a stronger affiliate for the market.
1998–2009[]
In 2004, Dix sold the station alonside KFBB-TV to Max Media.
2009–2022[]
In 2013, the Cowles Company announced that it would purchase Max Media's Montana stations which included KULR-TV and its sister stations. The sale was completed on November of that year.
