PSION was founded in 1980 by David Potter with the PSI part standing for "Potter Scientific Instruments". It started off as a software manufacturer with close ties to Sinclair and entered the PDA and handheld market thereafter.

On January 31, 2011, Psion announced that it had dropped "Teklogix" from its corporate name and introduced a new visual identity.
