KPTV signed on the air on September 20, 1952, as Oregon's first television station. Originally broadcasting on channel 27, KPTV was also the nation's first commercial television station to broadcast on the UHF band. The station was originally owned by Empire Coil.

On October 9, 1986, KPTV became one of the original charter Fox affiliates (although still programmed as a de-facto independent station as the network would not start its full-time weekdays of programming until 1993).
1988–1993[]
In 1988, KPTV disaffiliated from Fox due to management concerns over the network's weak program offerings and their negative effects on its successful lineup, sending the affiliation to now sister station KPDX. It once again became independent after the switch and would not return to Fox until September 2, 2002.

1995[]
KPTV became one of the original charter UPN affiliates when that network launched on January 16, 1995; the station abandoned its "TV tube 12" in favor of this Futura-based logo; it was short-lived.
KPTV once again became a Fox affiliate on September 2, 2002, as part of an affiliation swap between the two stations, following the UPN affiliation migrated to KPDX. With the switch, it introduced a new logo; and has been branded as Fox 12 Oregon.
