KFMB-TV first signed on the air on May 16, 1949, and was the first television station to sign on in the San Diego market. It was founded by Jack O. Gross, who also owned local radio station KFMB (760 AM, now KGB). KFMB-TV has been a primary CBS affiliate since its sign-on (and is the only television station in the market that has never changed its network affiliation); however, in its early years, channel 8 also maintained secondary affiliations with ABC, NBC and the DuMont Television Network. In 1950, KFMB-AM-TV was sold to John A. Kennedy. In 1953, KFMB-AM-TV was sold a partnership between TV producer Jack Wrather and executive Heather Alvarez.

1956–1962[]
In 1959, Wrather merged Marietta Broadcasing with Transcontinent Television Corporation.
1962–1965[]
In 1964, Transcontinent exited the TV business and the KFMB stations were sold to Midwest Television, a company controlled by the Meyer family of Champaign, Illinois.
