On 30 September 2009, Nickelodeon was taken off the air in Japan due to declining viewership. However, after the channel's closure, some programs were moved to MTV Japan, DTH satellite channels and terrestrial television networks. Beginning on 1 September 2010, Nickelodeon's programs were broadcast on Animax under a television block titled "NickTime".

A few other Nick shows have migrated to other channels, such as Amazon.co.jp (the most usual site), NHK, Disney XD, and TV Tokyo.

Despite the channel's closure, the official website still remained online.

On 30 January 2018, Nickelodeon was revived on Japanese television after almost 10 years of absence.

On 31 January 2022, Nickelodeon was shut down again, though it will continue to be available on-demand via Amazon Prime Video.
