In 2001, Joe FM's predecessor 4FM was created. In May 2007, 4FM was taken over by the VMMa group.

On 19 February 2009, the hosts of the 4FM station announced the station's name will become Joe FM in April of that same year. On 1 April 2009, the station changed its name and became Joe FM along with a new logo and slogan: The Smile, The Music.

In August 2012, Joe FM changed its slogan to Your Greatest Hits and implemented several new programmes.

Joe received a rebrand on August 16, 2016 with the slogan all the way.

On April 1, 2019, exactly 10 years after Joe was founded in Belgium, the station also became available in the Netherlands online.

2022-2023 (Netherlands)[]

Joe 70s & 80s logo

On April 29, 2022, DPG Media announced that the Dutch counterpart of Joe, referred to as Joe 70s & 80s, would launch on DAB+ on May 1, 2022.

On February 6, 2023, the station also launched in the Randstad on FM.

2023–present[]

Joe received an update on September 1, 2023 in the Netherlands with a differently colored logo and a new slogan good times, great music. Following in the Netherlands, Joe also received an update with the same logo and slogan in Belgium three days later. The Dutch counterpart is also available on FM in the rest of the Netherlands, making it DPG Media's second Dutch national FM and DAB+ station (behind Qmusic).
