The Cottonmouths were founded in 1996 and slated to join the Southern Hockey League as an expansion franchise. However, when the SHL folded that same year, the Cottonmouths (along with the Macon Whoopee and Nashville Nighthawks, both of whom were also intending to join the SHL) joined the Central Hockey League in time for the 1996 season.

2001-2004

In 2001 the club moved to the East Coast Hockey League. By 2004, Cottonmouths' management announced plans to move the franchise to Florida as the Gulf Coast Swords; the Swords would never take to the ice, with the franchise terminated by the league in 2006.

The Cottonmouths moved to the Southern Professional Hockey League in 2004.

2016-present

Columbus Cottonmouths logo (introduced 2016)

On June 7, 2016, the club unveiled a new logo, having finished their 20th season. The new logo was designed by the Barn Creative.[1]
