7mate was launched on 25 September 2010 in high definition.
When Seven HD was revived on 10 May 2016, 7mate was reduced to standard definition. While Seven HD became a simulcast of Seven's main channel in Melbourne and Adelaide, it became a simulcast of 7mate in Sydney, Brisbane and Perth as "7mate HD". 7mate HD briefly became a simulcast of Seven's main channel in August 2016 in order to simulcast the Rio 2016 Olympics in high definition in all capital cities. The change was made permanent after December 2016 to simulcast the Australian Open tennis and was not reverted, leaving all capital cities with 7HD.
