7flix was officially announced on 7 February 2016 as a film and entertainment channel on channel 76. It was launched on 26 February 2016. The inception of 7flix as Australia's first film-centric free-to-air channel is an attempt by Seven West Media to combat the threat of Foxtel as well as video-on-demand services such as Netflix and the locally-based Stan, run by Seven's main rival Nine Entertainment Co. and Fairfax Media.
Seven occupied channel 76 in December 2015 with a test pattern informing viewers of the upcoming channel. The test pattern was replaced with promo for the new channel on 7 February 2016.
